You will be surprised at the reply to the query - through advertising. In 1973 a new advertising campaign was launched by Duracell in which some pink rabbits ran on batteries. Over the years there have been some really fun commercials shown in different countries and languages including the UK, Mexico, Germany, Australia and Japan amongst many.

The advert showed that pink bunnies running on Duracell batteries kept going longer than those running on other batteries. The earliest commercials shown the Duracell bunnies banging drums, but as advertising has become much more sophisticated over the years, the campaigns have changed. The commercials have shown pink bunnies climbing up mountains, working out in the gym, at the World Cup and even skywalking.

Interestingly we do not see the Duracell bunnies in the United States anymore even though they were originally trademarked for us in the US and other countries. The reason for this is that Duracell failed to renew its trademark in the US and the company Energizer won the rights to use their own battery bunny in their advertising campaigns in the United States and Canada. The Energizer commercial showed their bunnies banging drums, similar to the Duracell commercials. However, they did make some changes in the way the bunny looked. The Energizer bunny’s body was a different shape, the ears were larger and in a different shade of pink. They also wore sunglasses and sandals with blue and white stripes.

There have been more than 100 adverts with the Energizer battery. The earlier ones showed a fake rival battery which looked remarkably similar to a Duracell battery! They introduced some villainous characters into some of the later commercials. These villains tried to capture and destroy the Energizer bunny. Some of my favorites include Darth Vader from Star Wars, Dracula, Boris and Natasha and even the Wicked Witch of the West.

The Duracell and Energizer bunnies have become so well-known that batteries and bunnies will be linked forever probably. Such is the impact of advertising and commercials. People tend to love bunnies and I’m convinced this is one of the principal reasons that these companies like to include them in their marketing campaigns.
